34-year-old housekeeper had been shot and killed right here. >> it was a code red or code blue where they shut the classrooms down. >> sarah ramos was sitting on the bench reading a book. >> a lot of parents, i remember them calling down and reminding me. everyone was afraid to get their children on the bus. >> the first shooting on the morning of october 3 happened at this gas station at aspen hill road and connecticut avenue. a husband and father of two was killed. >> this was a mobile gas station at the time. it was just after 8:00 in the morning. the 54-year-old part-time cab driver was shot and killed as he was gassing up at this pump. like the other victims. he was hit with a single shot. >> it's been a long time. i mean, we miss my dad. >> the 33-year-old andrew looked exactly like his dad. ten years after his murder and the family and the entire washington area still can't make sense of the slain. >> no, you can't forgive what

happened. you can't even forget. you know, you have lost loved ones. >> bruce johnson, 9news now. >> john allen mohommed and lee boyd went into d.c. that night, killed charlotte at georgia avenue, charlotte was a 72-year- old retired carpenter. fourwomen were fondled between campus and some popular offcampus housing. >> i'm in northwest d.c. cam police say four women were fondled between this stretch. between birkshire apartments and american university. >> it's scary when you know something is happening. >> i don't want it happening to any of my friends. >> reporter: american university students are on alert after hearing about the recent assaults on women. >> we like to think on college campuses, it's liberal and we are safe because we are in this close community.

it kind of, it puts things things into perspective. >> each incident was either in the early morning or late evening. in each case, campus police say the suspect grabbed the woman's backside and then ran away. in one case, the suspect also grabbed the woman's chest. while some say this will force them to be more cautious, others say they are unphased by it. >> it's something that women have to do because we are women. we have to protect ourselves. >> i live on the street. i walk this campus a couple times every day. i don't feel less safe. >> 9news. changes are coming to the g.e.d. test. that can serve in place of a high school diploma. more recent higher standards. some educators say that will make the changes tougher. >> it will be more difficult. because it is common core and

influx. >> convinced voters will reject the dream act. >> this law will go down in flames in november. >> campos hopes he is wrong. >> it will be like a piece of my life. >> bruce leshan, 9news now. >> good reason for hope. two recent polls, i should say, found that 60% of voters sported the dream act and 1/3 of voters oppose it. if voters approve it, it will be the first time ever. the early voting got started today in the presidential battleground state of ohio. tonight, the candidates are focusing their attention on colorado. president barack obama and governor mitt romney are making final preparations for their first debate. tomorrow night's focus, domestic policy with a heavy emphasis on the economy and jobs. joe biden spent his day campaigning in north carolina and republican running mate is due to arrive in charlottesville, virginia, tonight. in pennsylvania, a judge has blocked that state's voter

in today's economy. too many of those who are working are living paycheck to paycheck trying to make falling incomes meet rising prices for food and gas. more americans are living in poverty than when president obama took office and fifteen million more are on food stamps. president obama and i both care about poor and middle-class families. the difference is my policies will make things better for them. we shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. we should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good paying job. my plan will create twelve million new jobs over the next four years helping lift families out of poverty and strengthening the middle-class.

i'm mitt romney and i approve this message because we can't afford another four years like the last four years. ♪ planning ahead could save you money the next time you fly. starting november 6, spirit airlines says it will start charging customers $100 to check a carry on bag at the gate. if you check that same bag in advance, it will cost you $20 a piece. spirit says the idea is to encourage people not to wait until the last minute. the airline already charges for all bags that don't fit under the seat. a sky diver known as fearless felix will try to make history next week. on monday, he will break the sound barrier, dress in a pressurized suit, he will jump

from a balloon 23 miles above the new mexico desert. he hopes to reach a free fall speed of about 700 miles per hour. note to fearless felix, you can certainly probably pick up tips from a bunch of kids, they sure lee know all about breaking the sound barrier. >> australia's great barrier reef has spectacular colors between the fish, coral, sponges, all of that may be falling to the waist side. a 27-year-old study by the australian institute of marine science finds that the reef has lost 50%. scientists say they are trying to stem the tide. >> this is actually fertilizer pollution, feeding the star fish. >> it grows among the most environmentally friendly in the world. >> conservationists say

what a celebration it was at nationals park last night. washington still managed to win the national league east when atlanta fell to pittsburgh. >> fans are looking ahead to the playoffs. scot broom is live at the stadium with more. hi scott. >> that's correct. a couple more games against the phillies when it is off to the playoffs as national league east champions. fans are beside themselves, including a blast from the past. famed senator slugger, excuse me, famed senator slugger, howard. >> i think it's going to be great. >> he is 76 years old, retired in loudoun county. >> of course, always had great

station beneath. >> they are repairing one, the other one won't run. they don't let people walk down the run that's not running and everybody stands in the rain waiting for one escalator. >> oh wow. okay. it took metro an hour to reopen those escalators. some passengers tweeted they were tired of waiting and walked instead. >> on a rainy day, that is -- mention for years, cover the escalators. rain is no good. >> speaking of rain, 2.26 inches at dulles. that's a record. daily rain fall record. that's impressive. we have drizzle out there. nothing big time on radar, but because the warm front is pushing through, we run the risk of a shower or thunderstorm, but you're in good shape the next couple of hours to take in a ball game or walk the dog. here's a live look at our weather cam. you can see it is already foggy and misty around the capital

there. temperature, 72. that's the high so far today. winds are light and the pressure is actually rising 29.29 inches of mercury. satellite picture and the radar combined. the storm that was in northern alabama yesterday has drifted into western kentucky. but the warm front, that's what we are watching. this will move through tonight and as it does, that's going to generate a couple showers and a couple thunderstorms. but the good news is, it's going to put us in the warm sector of air tomorrow and end up with more sunshine. pretty much have to. we had showers into southern maryland. we'll zoom in. they decreased a little bit, but notice more thunderstorms down into richmond. and they are going to pull up to the north and east. essentially taking that same track into the northern neck and into leanardtown and a couple showers popping up now into charles county and even in prince georges county. they are generally light. mainly greens here. a couple yellows and oranges down toward the northern neck

and that is about it. so, warming up, no doubt about that. shower or thunderstorm still possible tonight. fog develops overnight. that will probably be the biggest problem tomorrow morning for the commute. warmer on wednesday and a nice finish to the week. a really nice finish to the week. mostly cloudy. shower and storm possible. low temperatures in the 60s. tomorrow morning, again, it may take all morning. skies will become partly clouted di and warm. 60s and 70s. partly sunny and warmer. slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm. high temperatures 85. average high is 75. that's 10 degrees above average. 85 tomorrow. maybe a storm late. great on thursday. partly cloudy, 84. fantastic on friday. mostly sunny, temperatures in the low 80s. it will kind of change over the weekend. we have the terps in town, the skins in town. maybe a shower late in the terps game. it will be mild, mid 70s on saturday. and then cooler on sunday. we're in the 60s sunday, monday, and tuesday.
